Catch all the highlights of Rotorua and fill your belly with tasty kai (food) on this full-day tour from Auckland.
The city of Rotorua is one of the most popular destinations for visitors to New Zealand, thanks to its situation on top of a hotbed of geothermal energy. It’s also known as the centre of Māori culture, and on your day tour you’ll experience both these unique features with a guided tour of Te Puia.
After a quick and easy coach trip down from Auckland, enlivened by your driver guide’s commentary, you’ll arrive at Te Puia, where authentic Māori culture is on display, along with some of the region’s most impressive geothermal features.
You’ll want to fuel up for your tour – luckily, we have a delicious treat in store for you! Sit down to a tasty buffet hangi lunch, cooked by experts at Te Puia. Hangi is a traditional Māori cooking technique where food is wrapped up and steam-cooked in an underground earth oven on top of hot stones, giving it a distinctive and delicious flavour.
Once you’ve enjoyed Te Puia’s legendary hospitality, set off on your guided tour. Your guide will show you what life was like in a traditional Māori village before the Europeans arrived, tell you stories and legends, and take you through the arts and crafts institute where wood and bone carving, weaving and tattooing skills are handed down through the generations.
You’ll also see the highlights of Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley, including the famous Pohutu Geyser, which regularly shoots steam as high as 30 metres in the air (that’s nearly 100 feet!).
After your full-on day tour your driver guide will take you back to Auckland, arriving in the early evening.
